Τhe first Report of the Republic of Cyprus on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was submitted to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on 2013.
On 22-23 March 2017, the first Report of the Republic of Cyprus on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was examined by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and a dialogue between the Committee and Cyprus Delegation was held.
On 8 May 2017, the UN Commission on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities issued its concluding remarks and recommendations. The Commission's recommendations per article concern the:
- Adoption of new laws and policies
- Greater support and involvement of representative organizations of people with disabilities
- Focus on the rights of women and girls with disabilities
- Improvement of early intervention services for children with disabilities
- Improvement of the approach to education for all
- Improvement of communication and information services
- Improvement of accessibility of public transport
- Provision of support for decision-making and abolition of guardianship
- Improvement of the accessibility to the justice system
- Prevention and reduction of violence against people with disabilities
- Ensurement of the right to independent living, to work, to adequate standard of living
- Improvement on data collection for people with disabilities
Taking into account the above recommendations, the Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (DSID), which is the focal point for the implementation of the Convention, in cooperation with other state services, coordinated the preparation of the first National Strategy on Disability 2017 - 2027 and the Second National Disability Action Plan 2017 - 2020 aiming at defining the vision, values, strategic goals and objectives of the Republic of Cyprus for the implementation of additional actions which further satisfy the rights of persons with disabilities in all areas of their life.
